Deterioration Processes on Prehistoric Rock Art Induced by Mining Activity (Arenaza Cave, N Spain)

چکیده

Arenaza Cave is located in Vizcaya (N Spain) and contains important Palaeolithic rock art representations. This cave belongs to an active karstic system developed on Lower Cretaceous limestones, mainly consisting of micrites biomicrites with abundant pyrite moulds. The paintings are made directly the host or thin stalagmitic calcite crusts. limestones this area contain iron ore deposits, which have been mined by subsurface surface-mining methods since beginning 20th century. Mining activities induced significant changes drainage pattern endo exokarstic morphologies system, affecting state conservation prehistoric paintings. Thus, addition natural process deterioration, enlargement limestone fissure as a result blasting-induced vibrations seems be responsible for rates water-rock interactions formation botryoidal gypsum concretions surface. final activation acceleration detachment processes increase irreversible deterioration cave.
